The cover!
The next, more common method is to cover up the old tattoo. Whether it's called cover-up tattoo or cover-up tattoo, the principle remains the same: create a new tattoo over the old one.
Think before!
Let's remember this , the best method to avoid having to cover a tattoo is reflection. Choose your motif carefully and especially your tattoo artist, who will advise you aesthetically and technically.
How to do this covering?
It involves creating a new tattoo over the old, called tattoo cover-up, cover or recovery. The choice between a simple correction, a transformation or a complete covering is crucial.

You have probably heard about it, around you or on social networks: tattoo inks are in the viewfinder for health reasons.
But, which inks are really affected? Does this decision really announce the end of tattooing in France and Europe?
A decision on a European scale
The questions about tattoo inks and their harmfulness do not not from yesterday. It was in 2015 that the questions began to arise. The European Commission has asked ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) to measure the health risks linked to tattoo inks and semi-permanent makeup.
The agency will conclude that these products are mixtures chemicals that can lead to skin allergies or even genetic mutations or cancers.
Following these responses, the European Commission will adopt the restriction of certain substances present in inks, with a law coming into force. effective in January 2022.
An arbitrary and unjustified decision?
Only certain manufacturers have agreed to answer questions about their inks, which does not constitute a reliable and solid basis for attesting to their composition. The conclusions formulated by ECHA are based on thresholds which would only be applicable to cosmetics.
The National Union of Tattoo Artists affirms that the limitation of substances is in itself a good principle, but that the established thresholds are therefore too low and unjustified.
Which inks are really concerned?
25 pigments are currently concerned by the ban, including several reds, oranges and yellows. They now represent the majority of inks sold on the European market, imported from the United States, where the ban is not in force.
At the end of 2021, no ink offered on the European market complied with the new regulations. All the inks purchased this year would therefore be unusable today. A quick decision that involves changing stock in too short a time for most tattoo artists.
Blue and green pigments are not safe from their upcoming ban in 2023. You can see here the before and after color palettes that can be used if this ban is adopted:
Quelles alternatives ?
It is of course possible to recreate unusable colors using other substances still used on the market. But, the process will make the inks much more expensive, which will lead to increased prices in the tattoo world in general. In addition, these new products will never give the same result as what we have had until now.
What are the risks for the profession?
The main risk is to reverse the principle of health protection desired by the European Commission by encouraging clandestine practices. Use of non-compliant inks in an illegal manner, concealment of products, tattoo parlors which close to go private and not undergo controls…
And among all this, the art of tattooing still wants to be stigmatized and censored.
Petitions are set up to fight against these measures, and other health tests are carried out at the same time to allow these laws to evolve as best as possible and find ground for improvement. viable agreement for tattoo artists.
Tattooing on the fingers has long been “reserved” for people already tattooed from head to toe, accustomed to needle and how it feels. It was unthinkable a few years ago to tattoo your hands for a first piece.
Recently, this area is becoming popular with stars proudly displaying their tattooed hands and fingers like Rihanna or Cara Delevingne.
More and more people are choosing this location for one of their first tattoos. Inspirational images are popping up on Pinterest or Instagram, and demand is increasing.
But faced with this new trend which is becoming more widespread, what is the opinion of professionals? What tips and information do you need to know? We will inform you on several points to know on the subject.
Pain
One of the first questions that customers ask when they have never been to the table. “Does it hurt? ».
You should know that pain is first and foremost specific to each person. Some people sometimes make a first large piece on the ribs – areas considered painful – without even flinching!
Despite everything, you should know that the fingers are very sensitive, if it is not the most sensitive area. more sensitive body. Equipped with a little more than 7000 nerve endings, you will inevitably feel the needle tickling you.
If the idea came to you to make a first "very small" tattoo to estimate the pain, this would not is not the area to choose!
Healing and aging
As we often explain to you, healing is a very important step in the process of a tattoo so that it ages correctly.
When we prick a tattoo, we inject the ink at the level of the dermis (second layer of the skin) which is located approximately 2 mm of the surface. The problem on the fingers is that the skin is very thin, and regenerates more often than on other parts of the body.
As you can imagine, your tattoo is very lucky to fade, which will require regular touch-ups. It may even deform or “fuse” as you can see in the image below.
No details!
The more details we want, the bigger we need the room to be. Indeed, the tattoo ages over time, we cannot afford to create details that are too small which would end up looking like a stain in a few years.
On the fingers, we obviously have little space to create a detailed drawing if you want it to remain correct over time. It will be better to opt for a lettering or a symbol.
If, despite everything, your opinion has not changed…
You are perhaps convinced after all that that you want when even that tattoo on your fingers, after all it’s your choice! Please note that not all tattoo artists will accept it, or under certain conditions.
Here at Sorry Mom, we accept tattoos on fingers from a certain age: when you have an already established profession , where you don't use your hands too much. For example, it will be complicated for a hairdresser who regularly has his hands in water to hold a correct tattoo on this area.
We will also expect you to already be quite well stung, so that you know pain and we have confidence in you decision.
Tattoos, although long criticized due to their permanent nature, are increasingly adopted by the French. But then, what are the tattoo figures in France?
Indeed, between 2010 and 2018, the number of French people who have experienced the needle increased from 10% to 18%. This figure is modest when we know that 46% of Americans have a tattoo, but it's still a nice development. At the same time, the number of French tattoo artists has increased considerably.
What does all that mean?
Well, over the years, we can clearly say that our profession is becoming more democratic and freeing itself from prejudices. Tattooing is becoming more and more part of our environment with new styles constantly emerging.
The global tattoo market is estimated at $104.6. It is expected, according to estimates, to grow by 5% per year.
Despite the lack of exact data in France, the number of salons in the country is estimated at 5,000, with a monthly turnover of between €2,000 and €10,000. All of this represents an average of 270 million euros per year on the French market! Not bad, for a country that remains behind on the issue of tattoos and their acceptance in society.
Is tattooing a thing for young people?
Actually, more or less. According to surveys carried out by Ifop on the French population, we realize that the most tattooed population is the Millennials (born between 1984 and 1996). This generation now represents more than 30% of French tattooed people. It is followed by 35-45 year olds who are not far from 26%.
However, we note that the number of French people with a good image of tattoos are much more numerous among young people (68% of 18-24 year olds) while only 8% of those over 60 share this idea. All these figures may suggest that tattoos will become more and more popular with the renewal of generations…
The main obstacles for French people before getting started
You may be yourself concerned by this hesitation, or you have already heard about it around you: many people want a tattoo but do not dare to take action. Harris-Interactive questioned a panel of hesitant people about the reasons why they do not get tattooed (or not yet).
The reason that comes up most often is the price considered too high for 42% of people. voters. It’s true, a tattoo often represents an investment, especially when it’s a large piece. But it stays with us for life, so we quickly paid for it! This is also the second reason that can hold back some people: the fear of regretting it, due to its permanent nature.
So yes, techniques still exist to retrace your steps: recovery, which can sometimes prove complex depending on the size of the part to be covered, or even laser, but which is very expensive and painful.| ||1215
Where do people get tattoos the most in France?
Against all expectations, the Paris region, which brings together the most people from the four corners of France (and the world) is far from being the most tattooed region: only 13% of its population has already been bitten at least once. We find the North-East in first position, with 26% of its inhabitants carrying at least one piece. Our region, the South-West, displays a proud second position, with 19% of inhabitants tattooed!
All these figures have been constantly increasing for around ten years, and will continue to increase more and more more scale. Who knows, maybe by 2050, as many French people as Americans will proudly display their tattoos!
