Tattoos, although long criticized due to their permanent nature, are increasingly adopted by the French. But then, what are the tattoo figures in France?

Indeed, between 2010 and 2018, the number of French people who have experienced the needle increased from 10% to 18%. This figure is modest when we know that 46% of Americans have a tattoo, but it's still a nice development. At the same time, the number of French tattoo artists has increased considerably.

What does all that mean?

Well, over the years, we can clearly say that our profession is becoming more democratic and freeing itself from prejudices. Tattooing is becoming more and more part of our environment with new styles constantly emerging.

The global tattoo market is estimated at $104.6. It is expected, according to estimates, to grow by 5% per year.  

Despite the lack of exact data in France, the number of salons in the country is estimated at 5,000, with a monthly turnover of between €2,000 and €10,000. All of this represents an average of 270 million euros per year on the French market! Not bad, for a country that remains behind on the issue of tattoos and their acceptance in society.

Is tattooing a thing for young people?

Actually, more or less. According to surveys carried out by Ifop on the French population, we realize that the most tattooed population is the Millennials (born between 1984 and 1996). This generation now represents more than 30% of French tattooed people. It is followed by 35-45 year olds who are not far from 26%.

However, we note that the number of French people with a good image of tattoos are much more numerous among young people (68% of 18-24 year olds) while only 8% of those over 60 share this idea. All these figures may suggest that tattoos will become more and more popular with the renewal of generations…

The main obstacles for French people before getting started

You may be yourself concerned by this hesitation, or you have already heard about it around you: many people want a tattoo but do not dare to take action. Harris-Interactive questioned a panel of hesitant people about the reasons why they do not get tattooed (or not yet).

The reason that comes up most often is the price considered too high for 42% of people. voters. It’s true, a tattoo often represents an investment, especially when it’s a large piece. But it stays with us for life, so we quickly paid for it! This is also the second reason that can hold back some people: the fear of regretting it, due to its permanent nature.

So yes, techniques still exist to retrace your steps: recovery, which can sometimes prove complex depending on the size of the part to be covered, or even laser, but which is very expensive and painful.| ||1215

Where do people get tattoos the most in France?

Against all expectations, the Paris region, which brings together the most people from the four corners of France (and the world) is far from being the most tattooed region: only 13% of its population has already been bitten at least once. We find the North-East in first position, with 26% of its inhabitants carrying at least one piece. Our region, the South-West, displays a proud second position, with 19% of inhabitants tattooed!

All these figures have been constantly increasing for around ten years, and will continue to increase more and more more scale. Who knows, maybe by 2050, as many French people as Americans will proudly display their tattoos!
